Overview of Phone

Use Phone to make phone calls, set up speed dials, keep track of calls, and send text messages. Your wireless service provider may also provide other useful services such as voice mail, Call Forwarding, and Caller ID.

If Internet calling is available on your device, you can choose to place calls over the Internet through a Wi-Fi network or over the cellular lines. If your organization provides Internet calling, you may need to be connected to its Wi-Fi network to use that Internet calling network.

The integrated phone in your device can also be used to connect your device to an ISP or work network so you can browse the Web and read e-mail. You can connect to the Internet or work network using a cellular line.

Overview of Internet calling

Internet calling allows you to make calls over the Internet, rather than using the cellular phone system. Internet calling may be preferred when:

  • You have Internet access and your cellular connection is poor, or you would incur roaming charges.
  • Your workplace provides an Internet calling system that you can use without using cellular minutes. However, if your workplace disables Wi-Fi, you will not be able to make or receive calls using Internet calling.
  • You want to make a call to a number that is available only over the Internet. These numbers appear in Contacts as number@URL or as an IP address (nnn.nn.nn.nn).

Your Internet Calling settings define your preferences for when to use internet calling and when to use cellular calling. You can override these settings for individual calls.

Internet calling is available when all of the following are true:

  • Your phone has a connection to the Internet, either wireless or through your desktop computer. If you lose your connection during a call, the call will be dropped.
  • Your phone can connect to an internet calling server.
  • Your Internet Calling settings permit you to make a call. Internet calling can be turned off, restricted to certain times of day, or restricted to times when cellular service is not available.

Tips

  • Use cellular if you expect to leave the Wi-Fi area before you finish the call.
  • To save battery life, turn off Wi-Fi if you will be out of Wi-Fi range for a long time.

  • If the provider appears as Internet Calling, the phone is not configured to use Internet calling.
  • If any other provider is listed, the Phone setting for Internet Calling is Never.
