Connect to an intranet URL
If you want to connect to intranet sites that have periods in their URLs (for example, intranet.companyname.com), you must add them to the Work URL Exceptions list.
- Tap
> Settings > Connections tab.
- Tap Connections > Advanced tab > Exceptions.
- Tap Add new URL.
- In Work URL, enter the intranet URL.
Tip
If you use many URLs that share the same root company name, you can avoid entering them individually by entering *.companyname.com.

Change server settings
You should not need to change these settings, unless your server doesn't use dynamically-assigned IP addresses. Most ISPs and private networks use dynamically-assigned IP addresses.
Servers that require an assigned IP address may also require a way to map computer names to IP addresses. Your device supports two name resolution options: DNS and WINS.
Contact your ISP to determine which name resolution you need to use, obtain the specific server address, and enter the information in the Server tab. Also, ask if alternate addresses are available. An alternate address may enable you to connect when the primary server is unavailable.

Change an intranet URL
- Tap
> Settings > Connections tab.
- Tap Connections > Advanced tab > Exceptions.
- Tap the intranet URL exception you want to change, and make the desired changes.
Tip
To delete a work URL exception, tap and hold it in the list, then tap Delete.

Configure network security settings
A wireless network can be added either when the network is detected, or manually by entering settings information. Before doing these steps, determine if you need authentication information.
- To enter information manually, tap
> Settings > Connections tab > Wi-Fi > Wireless tab.
Note that your device may say Network Cards instead of Wi-Fi.
- In Configure Wireless Networks, tap and hold the network you want to configure and select Edit. Or, tap Add New to configure a new network.
- Proceed through the wizard to the first Configure Network Authentication page.
- Select the authentication method from the Authentication list.
- To use data encryption, select an encryption method from the Data encryption list.
- To use a network key automatically, tap The key is automatically provided.
Otherwise, enter the network key.
- Complete the wizard.

You should not need to change these settings. Contact your ISP or network administrator before attempting to make changes.
Intranet or Ethernet networks are usually used for work-related activities, while Internet networks are used at home to connect to your ISP. The My Work Network settings are used for private network connections, while the Internet settings are used for connecting to Internet addresses.
You can set up programs on your device to use specific connections. For example, you may want your device to connect automatically to your ISP via an Internet network when using Internet Explorer Mobile, but to connect to work via a private network when using Messaging.
- Tap
> Settings > Connections tab > Connections > Advanced tab.
- Tap Select Networks.
- In the appropriate lists, select My ISP or My Work Network.

Before you begin, obtain the following information:
- From your cellular phone service provider: data connectivity plan information, access point name, and PAP/CHAP security settings.
- From your Internet service provider (ISP) or wireless service provider: access point name, user name, and password and other security information.
For a GPRS, 1xRTT, or dialup connection:
- Tap
> Settings > Connections tab > Connections.
- Under My ISP, tap Add a new modem connection.
- Enter a name for the connection, do one of the following, and tap Next.
- For a GPRS connection, select Cellular Line (GPRS).
- For a 1xRTT connection, select Cellular Line.
- Enter the phone number or access point name provided by your service provider, and tap Next.
- Enter the credentials provided by your service provider, and tap Finish.
For a Wi-Fi connection:
- Tap
> Settings > Connections tab > Wi-Fi > Add New.

Before you begin, get the following information from your network administrator:
For a GPRS, 1xRTT, or dialup connection, get the server phone number or access point name, your user name, and password.
For a VPN connection, get the host name or IP address, the VPN type (IPSec/L2TP or PPTP), and your user name and password. You may also need a key for authentication.
For a GPRS, 1xRTT, or dialup connection:
- Tap
> Settings > Connections tab > Connections.
- Under My Work Network, tap Add a new modem connection.
- Enter a name for the connection, do one of the following, and tap Next.
- For a GPRS connection, select Cellular Line (GPRS).
- For a 1xRTT connection, select Cellular Line.
- Enter the phone number or access point address provided by your network administrator, and tap Next.
- Enter the credentials provided by your network administrator, and tap Finish.
For a VPN connection:
- Tap
> Settings > Connections tab > Connections.
- Under My Work Network, tap Add a new VPN server connection.
- Enter a name for the connection, the host name or IP address, and the VPN type, and tap Next.
- If the VPN type is IPSec/L2TP, choose the authentication method specified by your network administrator (a certificate on the device or a pre-shared key), and tap Next.
- Enter the credentials provided by your network administrator, and tap Finish.
For a Wi-Fi connection:
- Tap
> Settings > Connections tab > Wi-Fi > Add New.
Note that your device may say Network Cards instead of Wi-Fi.
- Follow the wireless network setup wizard.
Tip
To delete a connection, tap and hold the connection you want to remove, and tap Delete.

End a connection
It can be useful to end a connection when you are done using it. This frees resources on the device and can save connection charges.
- Tap Start > Settings > Connections tab > Wireless Manager.
- Tap the button for the connection you want to end, such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
When the connection is ended, you see Off beneath the button.
Enter new wireless settings
A wireless network can be added either when the network is detected, or manually by entering settings information.
- To enter information manually, tap
> Settings > Connections tab > Wi-Fi > Wireless tab.
Note that your device may say Network Cards instead of Wi-Fi.

Before you begin, obtain the following information from your network administrator: user name, password, and domain. Some certificates do not require a password.
- Enter your user name, password, and domain.
- To save your password so that you will not be prompted each time you connect, select the Save password check box.
Note
Certificates already configured for this network should be automatically selected by your device. If a certificate cannot be automatically selected, you will be prompted to select the necessary certificate.

Before you begin, obtain your ISP server phone number or access point, user name, and password from your Internet service provider (ISP) or wireless service provider.
- Tap
> Settings > Connections tab > Connections.
- To create a new connection, in either group, tap Add a new modem connection.
- Enter a name for the connection, such as your company's name.
- In the Select a modem list, tap your modem type and tap Next.
- In the screens that follow, enter the information you obtained from your Internet service provider (ISP) or wireless service provider.
Notes
Wireless connections can be made via a mobile phone network or GPRS. If you are using a mobile phone network to connect, in the Select a modem list, tap Cellular Line. If you are using GPRS, tap Cellular Line (GPRS).
If you are using any type of external modem, in the Select a modem list, select the modem by name. If a listing does not exist for your external modem, tap Hayes Compatible on COM1.
If you call from a business complex or hotel that requires a nine before dialing out, enter 9 in front of the phone number. You can also do this using dialing rules or dialing locations.
If you know that part of the phone number will change frequently as you travel, you can create dialing rules to avoid creating multiple modem connections for the same phone number.
If you are using GPRS, instead of a telephone number you will need to enter the access point name provided by your wireless service provider.

- If necessary, enter the credentials for connecting with your proxy server.
- If you are configuring a Socks proxy, select Socks 4 or Socks 5. If using Socks 5, enter the credentials for connecting with your proxy server.

Select a certificate
Certificates already configured for this network should be selected automatically by your device. If a certificate cannot be selected automatically, the system will ask you to select the necessary certificate. For information on the correct certificate to select, see your network administrator.
- To select a certificate, tap the desired certificate.
- When prompted, enter your user name, password, and domain name.
Your device will then connect automatically.

Set up a network card
Use a network card to connect directly to an Ethernet network. Once connected, you can view the Internet or an intranet, or download e-mail. Ensure you purchase and configure a network card that is compatible with your device.
Before you begin, obtain the following information from your network administrator: user name, password, and domain name. Depending on your network, you may need proxy server or VPN connection settings.
- Insert the network card into your device.
- The first time you insert the card, Network Settings will appear automatically, so that you can configure the network card. If it does not appear, or to change settings later, tap
> Settings > Connections tab > Wi-Fi > Network Adapters tab.
Note that your device may say Network Cards instead of Wi-Fi.
- To enter specific server information, on the Configure Network Adapters screen, tap the appropriate network adapter.
- Because most networks use DHCP, you usually should select Use server-assigned IP address. If you have been instructed to use a specific IP address, select Use specific IP address and enter the information provided by your network administrator.
- If necessary, connect the network card to the network by using a network cable. For information, see the documentation that came with your network card.
- To start a connection, insert the network card. Then begin using a desired program, such as Internet Explorer Mobile to browse the Internet. Your device will connect automatically.
Note
If you use your network card with two networks, such as a private network at work and one at home for the Internet, you will need to change the network to which the network card connects.

Set up a WAP gateway
To access WAP sites through Internet Explorer Mobile, configure your device to use a WAP gateway.
Before you begin, obtain the ISP server phone number, user name, and password from your ISP. From your wireless service provider, obtain your WAP gateway server name and port number.
- Tap
> Settings > Connections tab > Connections.
- Tap Edit my proxy server. If a proxy server has not been set up, tap Set up my proxy server.
- On the Proxy Settings tab, select the check boxes titled This network connects to the Internet and This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet.
- If necessary, in the Proxy server box, enter the proxy server name.
- Tap Advanced > WAP.
- In the Server box, enter the WAP gateway server name. Under Port, enter the port number. The most common WAP port number is 9201.
- Enter any logon credentials required by the WAP gateway server.
Note
Some devices do not support the viewing of WAP sites.

If you are connected to your ISP or private network during synchronization, your device should download proper proxy settings during synchronization from your PC. If these settings are not on your PC or need to be changed, ask your ISP or network administrator for the proxy server name, server type, port, type of Socks protocol used, and your user name and password before you begin.
- Tap
> Settings > Connections tab > Connections.
- If a proxy server has not been set up, tap Set up my proxy server. Otherwise, tap Edit my proxy server.
- Select the check boxes titled This network connects to the Internet and This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet.
- In the Proxy server box, enter the proxy server name.
- To change such settings as port number or proxy server type, tap Advanced, tap the setting you want to change, and enter the new information. For more information, see Configure advanced proxy settings.

Set up VPN server connections
A VPN connection helps you to connect securely to servers, such as a corporate network, via the Internet. Ask your network administrator for your user name, password, domain name, TCP/IP settings, and VPN server host name or IP address before you begin.
- Tap
> Settings > Connections tab > Connections.
- To create a new VPN server connection, tap Add a new VPN server connection and follow the instructions in the New Connection wizard.

Turn wireless power on or off
You can turn off the power to your wireless connections in a single location. This is a quick way to preserve battery power or to prepare your device for an airplane flight.
- Tap
> Settings > Connections tab.
- Tap Wireless Manager.
- Do one of the following:
- Tap the button for a desired wireless connection type (such as Bluetooth or Phone) to turn it on or off. If it is turned off, the button is a lighter color and displays an icon marked with an X.
- Tap All to turn all wireless power on or off (available only when more than one wireless type exists on your device).
Note
To change settings for one of the displayed wireless connection types, tap Menu, then tap the type of settings you want to change.

View a document linked to an e-mail message
If an e-mail message youve received contains a link to a document located on SharePoint or an internal file server, you can view that document. However, you can view the document only if you have a Microsoft Outlook account that synchronizes with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 or later. Exchange Server must also be set up to allow access to SharePoint document libraries or internal file servers.
- On the Today screen, tap Start > Messaging.
- Select an e-mail account, then open a message with a link to a SharePoint document.
- Select the link to open the document.
Import a security certificate
To use S/MIME on your mobile device as well as on your personal computer, you need to import the S/MIME security certificate from the computer to the mobile device.
- On your computer, click Start > Run, then type mmc in the Open box.
- Click File > Add/Remove Snap-in > Add.
- In the Snap-in list, click Certificates, then click Add.
- Click My user account > Finish > Close.
- Under Console Root, expand the Certificates Current User folder.
- Expand the Personal folder, then click the Certificates folder.
- In the certificates list, right-click the security certificate, then click All Tasks > Export.
- Complete the Certificate Export Wizard, create a password for the certificate, and save the certificate file (.pfx) to the desktop.
- Copy the certificate file to the My Documents folder on the mobile device by using ActiveSync.
- On the mobile device, tap Start > Programs > File Explorer.
- Tap Menu > My Documents.
- Tap the certificate file, then enter the password.
Manage certificates on a device
- Tap
> Settings > System tab > Certificates.
- Tap the tab for the type of certificate you want to view or manage:
- Personal certificates identify the user of the device.
- Intermediate certificates help authenticate certificates received from other hosts.
- Root certificates authenticate certificates received from other hosts.
You can view the details of any type of certificate and delete any certificate you have added (but not those added by the device administrator). However, you can renewextend beyond the expiration dateonly personal certificates.

A personal certificate identifies you to other people and to entities such as a network.
- Connect your device to your computer.
- On the computer, open ActiveSync.
- Click Tools > Advanced Tools > Get Device Certificates.
- In View, click a certificate type.
- Click Enroll, then follow the instructions you see in each dialog box.
The new certificate is copied to the Personal certificate store on the device.

Install a new personal certificate from a file
Importing a .pfx or .p12 file is an alternative to enrolling for a personal certificate. A personal certificate identifies you to other people and to entities such as a network.
- Copy a .pfx or .p12 file to a folder on the device.
- Open the .pfx or .p12 file in file explorer on the device.
- Type the password to unlock the file, then tap Done.
The new certificate is copied to the Personal certificate store on the device.

Root and intermediate certificates help authenticate other certificates.
- Copy a DER-encoded .cer file, a base64-encoded .cer file, or a .p7b file to a folder on the device.
- On the device, tap Start > Programs > File Explorer, browse to the .cer file or the .p7b file and open it.
The new certificate is copied to the Intermediate or Root certificate store on the device.
