Secure your phone

You can prevent unauthorized use of your phone and protect your data in the following ways:

  • Protect your phone with a password, which will be required to unlock the phone. You can also set a time period after which your phone will be locked automatically.
  • Encrypt files as they are placed on a storage card, so that the files can be read only by using this phone.

Create a password for your phone

Use a personal identification number (PIN) or password on your phone to help keep sensitive information private.

Create a new PIN

  1. Tap Start > Settings > Lock.
  2. Select the Prompt if phone unused for check box, and then select the desired length of time from the drop-down list.

If the check box is unavailable, your system administrator has set a fixed or maximum duration.

  3. Tap the Password type box, and select the type of password you want.
    • Simple PIN is a 4-digit password that uses only the numbers 0-9.
    • Strong alphanumeric is a password that can have uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols, such as punctuation marks.
  4. Enter the password you want to use, and then confirm the password.
  5. On the Hint tab, enter a phrase that will help you remember your password if you forget it. Make sure your hint doesn’t allow other people to guess your password.
  6. On the Display tab, click the Unlock display list, and then select the screen you want.

Tips

  • A strong alphanumeric password provides more security than a simple PIN because it’s more difficult to guess.
  • You can always make emergency calls, even when your phone is locked. To avoid accidentally placing emergency calls, make sure you don’t begin your password with the digits of the local emergency services phone number.
  • If you use your phone on your organization’s intranet, a system administrator may require you to set a PIN or password the first time you connect. If you are prompted to set a PIN or password when you connect to an intranet, the steps to set it up may be slightly different.

  • Sync your phone with your computer less frequently (for example, once every hour or two, instead of once every five minutes).
