Use gestures
The Start menu uses icons, arranged in a hexagon pattern, to navigate programs and respond to touch gestures, such as tap and brush.
If your phone has a directional pad (D-pad), you can also use the D-pad to scroll up, down, left, or right.
Move a program to the top of the Start menu
On the Start menu, you can move your favorite programs to the top of the list, which places them in the upper-left position and moves each existing item to the right one space. You also can move items in submenus to the top of the Start menu.

You can easily unlock your phone from the Lock screen and go to the Today screen, or go directly to your contacts or e-mail. While your phone is locked, you can view, snooze, or dismiss alerts and alarms, place emergency calls, answer or ignore incoming calls, turn on or off the speakerphone, adjust the volume, and mute a call—all from the Lock screen.
Unlock your phone
To unlock the phone from the Lock screen, drag the lock slider to either edge of the screen. If you use a password, enter the password, and then click the icon for where you want to go:
View notifications on the Lock screen
To view notifications of SMS messages, e-mail messages, missed phone calls, or any other alert you’ve received, tap the lock slider. The notification type and the number of notifications will appear below the lock slider.
Go directly to applications from notifications.
To see the details of a notification in the appropriate program, drag the icon to the left or right. For example, if you have an e-mail notification and you drag the icon, you’ll jump automatically to the e-mail account. If you use a password, you’ll be prompted to enter that first.
Note
If you are using a company phone, you may be required to create a password to unlock your phone.
